Las Virgenes Municipal Water District in Calabasas, Calif., provides potable water, wastewater treatment, recycled water and biosolids composting to Los Angeles County in California. The reservoir holds 9,800 acre-feet of water, which is stored in times of high supply and from natural rain runoff. The filtration and disinfection plant process up to 15 million gallons of drinking water per day. The Tapia Water Reclamation Facility transforms wastewater into recycled water for use on public and commercial landscaping. From the Rancho Las Virgenes Composting Facility, a small percentage of biosolids from Tapia is applied to fertilize feed crops. The district and Triunfo Sanitation District launched a fuel cell co-generator that was financed by a California Energy Commission grant, the United States Department of Defense and the districts.
