I have only met with Dr. Atkinson to establish care with a local psychiatrist. I may go back to visit one more time just to be sure, but I am pretty sure he knows very little about bipolar disorder. Apparently, most of the patients he has treated "talk to angels or people who aren't there" or hear voices. Having been diagnosed with this manic depressive illness for over a decade now, and by three different doctors, I was disturbed by his lack of knowledge. In spite of the fact that it was obvious that I was stable because I am medicated, he told me I didn't exhibit any of the symptoms. Of course not, given the fact that I AM TAKING MY MEDICATION. He doesn't seem to understand that there are four types of bipolar disorder recognized by NIMH and seemed surprised when I mentioned that I was diagnosed in the category of bipolar II. I'm not even sure that he realizes that most bipolar patients rarely experience the psychosis he described to me (hallucinations, voices).

if you are able to see Dr Adkinson he will listen to you and consider what you know works for you pertaning to medication for mental health issues ...great place

My brother is Schizophrenic and he has been to Plateau several times and we have found them to be incompetent. We have tried several times to find other resurces for him but he keeps getting referred back to them. They are the only facility Cookeville has that I know of. They also have a very high turn-over rate for doctors and counselors. We are very disappointed with their services.
