Average prices for Average work

I needed a kitchen remodel and got several bids. Most of the reasonable bids were in the same price range, but I went with these guys because they seems very polite and professional. Boy was I wrong. When they bid me, they told me things like "first we'll have a sheetrock guy come out", "then we'll start building the cabinets", "then the painter will come out". They made it sound like they were actually going to contract the work out like a real contractor should so you have specialties do each job. They had two "handymen" do the entire job start to finish. The job starts and the first bump in the road was the painting. I was bid for a professional painter. They told me they had to let the painter go and that the cabinet builders were going to paint instead. They told me they let the painter go because he worked too slow, but I think they let him go because they were running over budget. I think they were running over budget because they told me it was going to take a week, and after a week they were just getting around to painting. None the less, the paint job was exactly what you would expect from a non-experienced painter. I had to babysit the entire time. Everyday I had to go through and mark where they had missed spots painting. They even forgot to tape off the countertops and painter over the bottom of them. That takes me to the next problem, the countertops. Once the granite countertops were installed there were dozens of chips on the edge of the tops all the way down, and there was even a huge chip in the back of one of the corners. At first they told me it wasn't a big deal and it was normal, but I insisted the granite guys come back and fix it. I also had a problem with the doors. In about a third of the door panels, there were obvious uneven cuts. They offered to sand them to get them straight, but never got around to it. They never got around to a lot of things. Also, I had them install a backsplash. The backsplash was not cleaned properly and they left it with a layer of grout for me to clean up before I could seal it. When I told them about some of the concerns I had after the job was over, they said they didn't want to go back over details of the job, and that I should just be happy with the work that I got because they lost money on my kitchen. Obviously they held a grudge against me because they had to pay workers for 3 weeks worth of work, when they told me it was going to be one week. Next time they need to plan better and give a more accurate bid, rather than blaming the customer for them taking too long and going over budget. In the end I wish I would have went with a more professional team. My kitchen looks nice, but I had to fight them every step of the way. If you hire these guys be prepared to babysit.
