I will admit, I was actually excited to have the opportunity to visit an OB/GYN's office.

Reason?

I am a DIE-HARD Mindy Project fan.

But made the mistake of confusing the competence of TV show doctors with real-life medical personnel with the health of real people in their hands.

Instead of seeing a real life professional version of Dr. Mindy Lahiri, I went to Advanced Women's Healthcare, an establishment that is anything but.

I was disappointed by the unavailability of an actual doctor, but I settled for a nurse practitioner since their appointments were booked up 2 weeks in advance.

You would think that 2 weeks advanced booking was a sign that it was a professional establishment, but here is the truth.

A woman goes to her healthcare provider hoping that they will be at least competent, and if the diagnosis is not uplifting, that they would at least live up to the Hipp

I found neither of those two here.

INCOMPETENCE

I went in for a simple birth control consultation expecting that I would walk away better informed with a feeling of safety.

I waited for about 20 minutes after arriving early and was seen by a nurse practitioner. I had read the initial pamphlet regarding different methods. I would hope that a consultation would clear up any advanced questions and have a solution tailored to my personal situation.

The nurse practitioner rehashed everything the pamphlet said, but was a little more scattered than the pamphlet.

But it was her response to the next question that completely floored me.

I asked her, "How many types of the pill are on there?"

Her priceless response:

IF YOU WANT, YOU CAN GO HOME AND GOOGLE ALL THE BRANDS OUT THERE

This nurse practitioner, who presumably went to medical school to study exactly how to help women's health, with access to medical text and accessibility to medical professors, and connections to other women's health experts, was telling ME to GO HOME and GOOGLE!!!

(There is a Louis CK routine on how he heard a doctor diagnose a 90 year old lady as having "probably a bunch of tumors in her head".)

But this lady outdid Louis CK's doctor--she didn't even know what was out there.

I asked her again what different types there was and we reached a point where we were talking about side effects.

One of the benefits of the pill was its control over acne outbursts, so when I heard the nurse practitioner saying how it might CAUSE acne, I brought it up to her.

She said that she had already said it might go both ways.

(uh, hello, I might wear glasses but I'm not deaf.)

Letting this slide, she asks me if I want to book another appointment.

Seeing how unsure she was of even describing the medication she would be prescribing, I was reluctant to do so.

She kept on pushing even after I asked her twice what medication she would be subscribing to me.

Then seeing that I was not very pleased with her explanations, her next words shocked me even more

LACK OF OWNERSHIP

"Would you like to see another provider?"

I was surprised to see her relinquish trying to help her patient after 10 minutes.

If this is how she approaches consultations, lord save us all if she starts delivering babies.

Highly UNRECOMMENDED.

The medical "professionals" here have the audacity to tell you to "go home and Google", and refer you to others after taking your co-pay.

As she has said, she's doing this for your health, well, I'm going to add to that, for your health, avoid Advanced Women's Healthcare.
